Tucked away in Hokkaido, Japan, Sakuranotaki Falls (さくらの滝) isn't just a beautiful waterfall; it's the electrifying backdrop for an awe-inspiring annual salmon run. This natural wonder captivates visitors worldwide, offering a front-row seat to one of nature's most powerful spectacles.

Don't let its modest 3-meter height fool you—Sakura Falls is home to one of Japan's most captivating natural events. Though delicate cherry blossoms appear in spring, it's the cherry salmon's astounding leaps in July and August that truly define this spot. These are no ordinary fish; they're "Yamame" (or "Yamabe" in Hokkaido), the "Queen of a mountain stream," returning from their ocean journey to lay eggs.

While salmon jump in other parts of Japan, it's incredibly rare to see them tackle a waterfall of this magnitude. Witnessing their sheer determination as they fight against the current, requiring immense strength and perfect timing to succeed, is an experience that will have you loudly cheering them on.

It was my first time seeing it in person, but I'd long been fascinated by the annual migration of thousands of salmon, as they bravely push upstream against fierce currents to their spawning grounds. At Sakuranotaki Falls, these determined fish put on an unforgettable display of strength and resilience as they leap tirelessly over the cascading waters. Witnessing this natural phenomenon firsthand is an experience that will leave you breathless.

The official map indicated salmon viewing season runs from June through August. Our mid-June visit was perfectly timed, as we witnessed a thriving salmon population. The observation point is conveniently located a short distance from the parking area. Watching these fish furiously fight their way up the waterfall was mesmerizing. We effortlessly spent an hour in awe.
