Trondheim: Norway’s Historic Heart
A Glimpse of Trondheim: Norway’s Historic Gateway
Our Norwegian adventure in May 2017 began with a swift SAS Airlines flight from Oslo, whisking us northward to Trondheim, Norway’s third-largest city. The journey itself was a picturesque prelude, offering stunning aerial views of Norway’s rugged, verdant landscape. Upon landing, a comfortable bus ride transported us from the airport to our hotel, where we arrived around 9 PM. What struck us immediately was the lingering daylight; even at this late hour, the sky was a brilliant, almost midday blue, a testament to the extended daylight hours of a Norwegian spring. This prolonged brightness, a delightful surprise, added to the sense of anticipation for our brief stay.
Our itinerary for Trondheim was concise but strategic: one night to soak in a touch of its charm before embarking on the iconic Hurtigruten coastal cruise the following morning. This fleeting visit was designed to offer a taste of Trondheim’s unique atmosphere – a blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy – before we set sail for Ålesund. The late evening light provided a perfect opportunity for a preliminary exploration of our surroundings, hinting at the beauty that awaited us in this historic city by the Trondheim Fjord.

Gamle Bybro: Trondheim’s Iconic Old Town Bridge
A highlight and a must-do in Trondheim is a visit to the city’s old port area at the mouth of the Nidelva River. There, a striking collection of colorful old wooden warehouses, built precariously on piles above the water, creates a truly picturesque scene. The best view of these stunning buildings is undoubtedly from Gamle Bybro, the Old Town Bridge. This iconic red bridge, affectionately known as “The Portal of Happiness,” offers an unparalleled vantage point, allowing visitors to capture the charming reflection of the vibrant facades in the calm river waters. It’s a place where history and beauty converge, providing a quintessential Trondheim experience. Strolling across this bridge, you feel transported to another time, as the unique architecture tells tales of Trondheim’s mercantile past.

Restaurant Nidelven
Better come hungry to the Norwegian breakfast table! The title “Best Breakfast in Norway” is well deserved. We chose to stay at Scandic Nidelven Hotel simply because of the breakfast. 🙂

There are a lot of choices. Cheese, salami, smoked salmon, tomato mackerel, home made liver pate, freshly made omelet, Cereals, freshly baked bread & pastries, yogurt, smoothies, juices, pancakes, etc. Don’t forget to try their brunost (brown cheese).

Definitely overfed myself again…
