1741

We dined at 1741 just a few days before Christmas. It was directly opposite the Palais Rohan. From the outside it was beautiful decorated for Christmas, inside we were seated on the top floor in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere. Our table for two felt very spacious and private. Their staff were very friendly and professional. Since we don’t speak French and all the staff were trying their best to explain the dishes to us in English. I loved every single dish, they were so refined and elegant. Every course was truly delicious. I’d love to come back to 1741 on my next visit to Strasbourg.

Colmar Christmas Market

Colmar Christmas Market

Christmas Market

The city feels like it was pulled straight from the 16th century. The fairy-tale setting of the old town is even more magical at Christmas. The whole town is decorated like in a dream. The old town of Colmar hosts 5 magical Christmas markets with a variety of food , trinkets, wines and rides for children.

Another big reason to visit Colmar is the incredible food options throughout the city. There are lots wooden stalls are dedicated to local produce, such as foie gras, Christmas sweets, and Alsatian wines.

It is a great place to take postcard-like pictures, in the storybook-like towns along the colorful tinted houses. The houses are decorated and lit up. You could easily spend a few days here wandering the cobbled streets from market to market especially at night.

Aachen Christmas Market

Aachen Christmas Market

Christmas Market

The location of Aachen is very accessible from the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Try their Punsch or Glühwein (the local mulled wine). Aachen’s Cathedral is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Germany. Aachen’s main Christmas market is concentrated on the large squares around the cathedral in the old town area. There are around 120 stalls at the main market.

The local specialty is the Aachener Printen (a type of Lebkuchen with Christmas spices). You will find the giant Printen cookies guard the entryway to the Christmas market.

Driving to Monaco

We went to Monaco in a day trip from Eze, France. I often heard people often said that Monaco is the Beverly Hills of Europe. Well, then we needed to go investigate to see if it was true. 😀

View from Eze to Monaco

Arrived Monaco!

Vieux Monaco

Vieux Monaco sits on a rocky hill with awe-inspiring views in all directions. Certainly well worth the walk for the beautiful view.

Place du Palais (Prince's Palace)

We watched the Monaco Prince's Palace changing of the guard. It took about 15 minutes.

There was a souvenir shop near the Prince's Palace. We purchased stamps and postcards here and mailed from the cute red mailbox outside.

Didn't do our homework before we visited... there was a dress code after 7pm. Also there was admission fee for everyone except the Players Club members.

A Day Trip to the Medieval Village of Eze

France

Things to Do & See in Eze

Eze is located between Nice and Monaco. It is a 1000+ years old village on a high cliff (1,401 feet above sea level). Looks like we will have some uphill walking/climbing today.

We rent a car and drive from Toulon and it takes about 2 hours. We arrive almost around noon. The tourist information office is excellent providing assistance in many languages, maps and time tables of the buses and trains. Hence, we book a walking tour from the tourist information center. I’d suggest that you arrive early because you cannot drive up with your own car and parking in the tourist parking lot is limited. It takes us quite a while to find the parking space.

Lunch at Le Pinocchio
We have lunch at “Le Pinocchio” at the base of the old village. Afterwards we take a leisurely climb up the winding street to the old village.

Upon entering I feel transported back to the Medieval period while walking up the uneven stone streets through narrow passages. Beautiful old town hanging on a cliff side overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with fabulous views.

1. VIEUX EZE

The village is very well preserved and chic. It’s full of winding medieval cobblestone streets with quaint little shops and cafes. Many of the old residences have been converted into jewelry shops, art galleries, souvenir shops, and boutiques.

Easy Day Trips in Toulon

Easy Day Trips in Toulon

France

Toulon is located in the southern of France between Marseille and Nice. It is not a major tourist destination like other cities in France. We are visiting Toulon mostly because our friend’s mother-in-law lives here and she is on a vacation to somewhere else. We are lucky to stay at her place and have our friend Zoe tour us around Toulon.

Things to Do & See

1. COURS LAFAYETTE

Typical french market with huge selection of fruits, cheese, vegetables, and various merchandise. It’s the heart of the old town near the harbor. The market stretches for many blocks. We bought some food and went home made our own lunch. Closed around 1pm.

2. TELEPHERIQUE DU MONT FARON

Fun gondola ride to the top of Mt. Faron. You will need to take the bus to the lift. We purchased the ticket at the tourism office near the Cours Lafayette market. The top of Mt. Faron is a pleasant stroll for an hour or so.

3. RADE DE TOULON

The Rade de Toulon is the largest French naval port in the south of France and the Mediterranean. If you want to get on the water there are various tourist boat tours. We took the boat to Porquerolles. It’s very enjoyable!

Porquerolles is the largest and most westerly of the 3 islands in the Îles d’Hyères. Day trip to Porquerolles was a lot of fun. Rent a bike when you arrive. It’s the best way to visit different beaches, shores and vineyards.

Meirerei am Stadtpark

Brunch

Meirerei is dairy-inspired and the "little sister" of Steirereck in the same modern stainless steel building in Stadt Park. Great place for breakfast or brunch. Can't wait for our dinner in the upstairs restaurant Steirereck! This is a very spoiled day. 😛

Dinner at No. 15 - the world's 50 best restaurants

The restaurant was on the 2015 "The World's 50 Best Restaurants" list. It was located inside a modern stainless steel building set in Stadt Park. From amuse-bouche to the bread and cheese selections it had quite innovative touches. We chose the 7 course testing menu and were not disappointed in any one of them. Food was absolutely world class!

Your choice sliced fresh off the loaf!

It could be as excited as choosing the cheese! We were offered a HUGE selection of bread from the bread trolley. I would like to try all please! 🙂

We each received a card naming all of the dishes. The list of ingredients gives you a clue of what to expect when the plate arrives at the table.

Carrots

Young carrots with fennel, coconut and reinanke.

Puntarella with Kaki, Salted Capers & Bouchot Mussels

Puntarella: The hearts of this rare member of the chicory family have a flavour similar to atichoke and asparagus while the leaves are reminiscent of dandelion.

Pike Perch

Pike Perch with cabbage sprouts, berberis & almonds.

Pheasant

Pheasant with salted lemon-braised onions, chard & groundcherry.

Milk Fed Veal

Milk fed veal with young cabbage, turnip & bone marrow.

Choose your cheese!

The bread and cheese carts are worth the visit for alone! The cheese cart is the highlight of highlights!

Quince

Quince with Burnk milk & lavender.

Leopoldauer Alm

Austria

Very cozy and comfortable atmosphere. It's kind of a place where locals hang out. The menu is big and the food portions are huge but tasty.

Soups

Bayrische Zwiebelsuppe (German Onion Soup)

Fritattensuppe (Beef Broth Topped with Strips of Sliced Pancake)

Knoblauchsuppe (Thuringia Garlic Soup)

Fleisch Knodel

Meat Dumplings.

Spareribs Klein

Wiener Schnitzel

Super sized Schnitzel that was the biggest I have ever had. Tender and crispy.

Café Sacher Wien

Austria

This is where the famous Sachertorte originated and invented. The atmosphere is what you might expect - old world Vienna in a timeless historical setting. Beautiful and elegant atmosphere with the red furnishings and chandeliers. The prices are a little steep but overall it's a great experience.

Original Sacher-Torte

Here's the original Sacher-Torte with whipped cream. Really rich and dense chocolate cake. A little bit on the dry side. Although the Sachertorte isn't my favorite dessert, I know my Vienna adventure wouldn't be complete without it. 🙂

Original Sacher Gewürzgugelhupf

Viennese ring cake with sweet spices (ginger and candied oranges)

Böhmische Liwanzen

Bohemian pancakes with plum butter and plum sorbet.

Fall in Love with Vienna in Winter

Austria

Vienna in Winter

After finishing our trip in Croatia for a week, we were heading to Vienna.  It's the capital and the largest city of Austria. Beautiful architecture and delicious food. Home to both Beethoven and Mozart. We spent 2 full days in Vienna which was not enough to enjoy this beautiful city!

Albertina

This was a beautiful, old but modern museum.  Really well laid out exhibit halls. We enjoyed our visit, particularly the Edward Munch collection. We were actually here to see the Scream! :-O)

Saw The Scream!

Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum)

You can easily spend a few hours at this museum. Each room holds unique and interesting exhibits. The dinosaurs was what I loved the most and it was really impressive. The museum was most famous for the Venus of Willendorf. It was really cool to see it in person. Hands down, this was definitely the best natural history museum I have ever visited!

State Opera House

The building was beautiful. Unfortunately we didn't book the tickets in advance. We took advantage of the showing of the Opera on the big screen outside the Opera house. It was freezing cold outside but totally worth it.

Live videostream outside the Vienna State Opera House

State Opera House Guide Tour

We could not get any tickets to an opera performance so instead we booked a guided tour (separate tours in multiple languages) in the opera house. The 45 minute guided tour included stopping in some of the ornate rooms and the auditorium.

Café Sacher Wien

The cafe was just behind the State Opera House. We popped in to have some tea and Sachertorte since it was one of the most famous gastronomic foods to try in Vienna. It was a bit pricey but worth it!

Concerts at the Mozarthaus (Mozarthaus deutschordenshaus)

The room was said to be the oldest concert hall in Vienna. Small performance beautiful room with less than 100 people. The venue was intimate and the sound quality was impressive.

Concerts in Mozart’s House

Stephansplatz

Stephansplatz was a busy and popular square right in the center of Vienna.  It was a great pedestrian area surrounded by shops and cafes. During the holidays the city was very festive. Very atmospheric especially with he Christmas season.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

We visited St. Stephan's Cathedral at night. It was breath taking. The exterior and intricate design of tiled roof were stunning. We were there in the winter so it wasn’t very crowded.

Manner Shop

Located right across from St. Stephen's Cathedral. Prices are around the same as local supermarkets. They also have Mozart chocolates and other fun touristy things. The shop was super busy but the service was pretty good. Great place to get souvenirs.

Belvedere Palace Museum

Went to see the famous “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt.

The Palace has stunning decoration inside with painted ceilings and marble floors which are breathtaking.

Gustav Klimt | Kiss

When I saw the Kiss I was blown away by its power and exquisite beauty. It was so different when you saw it for real.

Looked like it was snowing pretty hard while we were inside.

Hotel Bristol Vienna

The hotel was located next to the Opera House. The location was perfect, closed to the Palace, the pedestrian shopping area, and the Sacher Hotel. Our room was overlooking the Opera House which was awesome!

Good morning Vienna!
